Mendelssohn Singers
...based in Exeter

One of the requirements of my MA course in English Cathedral Music at the University of Exeter was choral directing: I had to get my own choir together, plan and rehearse a programme of choral music and conduct them in a public performance. I soon realized that I would have an amazing number (40!) of high calibre singers available for that project (the majority of the gentlemen were layclerks of Exeter Cathedral!)... and since one of the pieces to rehearse was Mendelssohn's "Jauchzet dem Herrn alle Welt" (Psalm 100 in German), we decided to call ourselves... THE MENDELSSOHN SINGERS.
.
Within a couple of weeks we rehearsed all the music we needed for Evensong at Exeter Cathedral on 18th May 2005, the day when I was going to be assessed by the University. Highlights were Herbert Howells rarely sung "Sarum Canticles" and the Mendelssohn anthem mentioned above. They all made a terrific sound and I thoroughly enjoyed working with them and Andrew Millington (Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral), our guest organist. Listen to the sound samples below - you won't be disappointed!
